Although
ruled by Russia and the Soviet Union for much of its history, a large
portion of Ukraine also formed part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
It was in Ukraine that the Baal Shem Tov initiated the Chassidic movement
more than 200 year ago. Moreover, some of the greatest Jewish writers
and poets of the twentieth century hail from Ukrainian towns and villages.
Since the collapse
of the Soviet Union, many Ukrainian Jews have left for Israel. Yet
those remaining are rebuilding Jewish institutions and communal
structures with unparalleled energy and dedication. The Ronald S.
Lauder Foundation is a committed partner in this rebirth.
Gymnasium
Acheinu Lauder
The Foundation proudly sponsors Gymnasium Acheinu Lauder,
which educate Jewish children from preschool through high school.
In addition, through a grant to the school, the Foundation has made
possible the purchase and renovation of a new campus which would
allow for the consolidation of the entire school in one location.
Students study
an academic curriculum approved by the Lviv Board of Education and
supplemented by a strong Jewish studies program. Families of students
join the schools in celebration of Jewish holidays throughout the
year. This year, over 1300 people participated in a school-run Seder.
Kiev Jewish
Primary and Secondary School
The Ronald S. Lauder Foundation is also proud to support the Kiev
Jewish Primary and Secondary School which educates over 500
hundreds Jewish children each year. The school's dormitory facilities
allow not only local children, but children from all over the country
to receive a strong Jewish and secular education.
