| Although the
proud and historic Jewish community of Romania is but a fraction of
what it once was, Bucharest's Jews still operate a kosher restaurant,
two synagogues, a museum, and a Jewish Theater -- all in the heart
of the old Jewish quarter.
Noticeably
absent in recent years, however, had been the existence of any formal
Jewish educational institution. This changed with the opening of
The Lauder Reut Kindergarten and Lower School in 1997.
The Lauder
Reut Kindergarten and Lower School, Bucharest
This remarkable program housed in the renovated Jewish Theater
is an innovative concept in children's education -- it is the first
art and multi-media kindergarten in Romania. In addition, youngsters
learn about Jewish tradition, use computers and study Hebrew, Romanian
and English. The Jewish Community of Romania, very enthusiastic
about the kindergarten, brings hot kosher lunches daily.
There are currently
72 children enrolled in the Lauder Reut Kindergarten and
81 children enrolled in the Lower School for a total of 153
students.
In addition,
The Ronald S. Lauder Foundation enables children from Romania to
attend The Ronald S. Lauder Foundation/American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee International Summer Camp at Szarvas,
Hungary.
